So many companies entered the Indian market. If you’re thinking of buying a car in India, there’s no shortage of options. But it can be confusing. Because there are a lot of car brands in India.

Well, the answer to this question depends on the buyer. Every person has a different taste at a different price.

Today I am going to share the car brand in India. Not only the Indian car companies but also the foreign companies that are ruling the Indian market.

No doubt that the automotive market is growing rapidly. So many car brands are manufacturing cars in India. The companies are competing with each other.

There are many car brands that sell their cars in India. Not only Indian but German, Japanese, American, Italian, & many other car companies opened their subsidiaries to manufacture and sell their cars in India.

I have organized them by their market share.

Here are the passenger car brands in India by market share.

#1 Maruti Suzuki

The automobile manufacturer was founded in 1981. The Government Of India founded the company and used to own it until 2003. Formerly, it was known as Maruti Udyog Limited. Then, in the year 2003, the Japanese automobile manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation bought the company. Which is the world’s 10th largest automobile company by sales volume.

So now Suzuki Motor Corporation is the parent company of Maruti Suzuki India Limited with a stake of 56.37%. The company manufactures Automobiles, Commercial vehicles, & Automotive parts.

Some of the Maruti vehicles such as Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Maruti Suzuki Alto, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, & Maruti Suzuki Eeco are top-selling vehicles in India.

The automobile manufacturer has a capacity of manufacturing 2,250,000 vehicles per year. Maruti Suzuki has 3617 sales outlets and 3904 service workshops as of 1st September 2020.

#2 Hyundai Motor India

Hyundai Motor Company is a South Korean automobile manufacturing company that owns Hyundai Motor India. It entered the Indian market in 1996. When it entered the market there were only Indian car manufacturers like Maruti, Hindustan, Premier, Tata, and Mahindra.

At first, they launched Hyundai Santro in India which become a huge success. Since then Hyundai dominating the Indian market. Now Hyundai Motor Limited is the second-largest automobile manufacturer. It has a market share of 16.24%. Surprisingly Hyundai Motor sells vehicles in 193 countries.

Hyundai Motor Limited has 2 plants in India with a capacity for manufacturing 7,40,000 cars per year. HML manufacturers only automobiles in India. Although the Hyundai Motor Compay manufactures Automobiles, Luxury cars, Commercial Vehicles, and Engines.

HML has some best-selling cars in India such as Hyundai Elite i20, Hyundai, Grand i10, and Hyundai Creta. One and only Shah Rukh Khan is the brand ambassador of Hyundai.

#3 Tata Motors

Tata Motors is an Indian automotive manufacturer in India. It was founded by J.R.D Tata in 1945. Initially, it was a locomotive (railway engine) manufacturer. Then in 1954, they entered the commercial vehicle sector. Tata Motors manufactures Automobiles, Luxury vehicles, Commercial vehicles, Automotive parts, Pickup trucks, & SUVs.

Surprisingly Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover, a luxury vehicle manufacturer in 2008. Since the acquisition of its subsidiary Tata Motors. Undoubtedly, Tata is among the Indian car companies that are ruling the market. With over 8,800 sales and service points, Tata Motors is the third-largest sales and service network.

Tata has manufacturing plants at Pune, Jamshedpur, Pantnagar, Lucknow, Sananda, and Dharwadin. Not only this, but it also has manufacturing plants in the UK, Argentina, South Africa, and Thailand. The company sold 76,210 units of its vehicles in May 2022. Tata Nexon is the most selling among Tata cars in India. There are some other popular models as well such as Altroz, Tiago, Harrier, Punch, Tigor, and Safari.

The automotive manufacturer has dealerships in 26 countries.

M&M is part of Mahindra Group, an Indian MNC conglomerate. It is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers by production in India. It is the first Indian company to open a car manufacturer plant in the USA. Before M&M no other Indian company had a plant in the USA.

In 2018 the company ranked #18 by Fortune India 500. In the year 2020, the production output is 4,76,043 vehicles. Mahindra has some popular car models such as Scorpio, Bolero, Xylo, etc. The M&M best-selling cars are Mahindra Thar, Mahindra XUV300, & Mahindra XUV700. In January 2022 the company sold 19,860 vehicles.

#5 Kia India

Kia is a South Korean automobile manufacturer company. To operate in India Kia formed a company called Kia India Private Limited in 2019. Comparatively, it is a new car company in India. But still, Kia becomes a well-known brand in a short time. Hyundai Motor Company is the parent company of Kia Corporation. Now Kia manufactures automobiles in India. The Indian Kia plant has a capacity of manufacturing 300,000 vehicles per year.

Some of the popular models are Sonet, Carnival, Carens, EV6, & Seltos. Even though it’s a new company Kia manufactured 227,844 vehicles in 2021. The automotive company has 236 showrooms in India.

#6 Toyota Kirloskar Motor 4.05%

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, a Japanese automotive manufacturer company. It is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1997, Toyota Kirloskar Motor is a joint venture between Toyota and Kirloskar. The Toyota Corporation was founded in 1937.

Toyota entered the Indian market in 1887. Since then they never looked back again. The giant car company has a capacity of manufacturing 320,000 vehicles per year. Toyota has some popular cars manufactured/assembled in India i.e. Toyota Camry, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova Crysta, Toyota Hilux, Lexus ES300h, and Lexus NX300h.

In 2021 Toyota Innova Crysta was Toyota’s best-selling car. In fact, the company sold 55,260 units of this model in India.

Founded in 1899, Renault is a French automotive manufacturer brand. Previously Renault used to produce trucks, tractors, tanks, & aircraft engines. But now Renault manufactures automobiles, electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, & luxury cars.

Renault entered the Indian market in the year 2005. And they registered Renault India Private Limited. They are selling only four models in India SUV Duster, MPV Triber, SUV Kiger, and Kwid. It sells only 4 models but still, it’s one of the popular car brands.

Only in the month of April 2022, 2910 Renault Triber were sold in India. The company won a bunch of awards from different organizations such as Car India, Zig Wheels, Indian Car Of Year, NDTV, Economic Times, and many others.

Renault has a facility of manufacturing 480,000 units per year. The automotive company has 575 dealerships across 455 cities.

#8 Honda Cars India Limited

Honda Cars Limited is an automobile manufacturer in India. It is a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company Limited (a Japanese company). Honda Cars India Ltd. was established in 1995. At the present time, Honda doesn’t need any introduction in India. Not only cars but Honds is also dominating the Indian two-wheeler market.

Surprisingly, Honda has a 24.84% market share in the two-wheeler market. Earlier it was known as Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI). Later they changed the name to Honda Cars India Limited. Apart from cars Honda Motor also manufactures motorcycles, scooters, electric generators, water pumps, robotics, jet aircraft, and jet engines.

The company has 371 dealerships across 121 cities in 20 states and 3 Union Territories of India. There are multiple Honda car models that are thriving in India such as Jazz, Amaze, City, & WR-V. Honda Amaze is the most selling Honda car in April 2022. Over four thousand units of Honda Amaze were sold.

The car company manufacture and sales of Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda vehicles in India. In short, it’s the boss of most reputed car companies. In India, Volkswagen has 2 manufacturing plants with a manufacturing capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

Volkswagen manufactured some cars locally i.e. Volkswagen Taigun, Volkswagen Virtus Skoda Kushaq, & Skoda Slavia. The giant automotive company has 125 authorized showrooms across India.

MG Motor India Private Limited is a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, a Chinese automobile manufacturer. It was founded in 2017. Two years later, the company began manufacturing & selling in India. Astor, Hector, Hector Plus, Gloster, & ZS are some of the models by MG Motor.

MG Motor India has a plant in Gujrat that has a manufacturing capacity of 80,000 per unit. The company appointed Benedict Cumberbatch as the brand ambassador. The automotive company has 102 showrooms in India.

Nissan India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nissan Motor, a Japanese automobile manufacturer. And Nissan was the world’s 6th largest automobile manufacturer in 2013. At the present time, Nissan sells its cars under two brands Nissan & Datsun in India.

The company has some popular car models such as Nissan Kicks, Nissan Magnite, and Nissan GT-R. In April 2022 the company, the company sold 1966 units of Nissan Magnite. They also import their car to India. Nissan and Renault also have a joint venture named Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited. Ford India is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, an American automobile manufacturer. Although It’s an American company but operates in multiple countries including India. Ford India was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between Ford and Mahindra & Mahindra.

As of September 2021, the company had 400 showrooms in India. Currently, they are only selling 1 model in India which is Ford Mustang. The company announced that it will stop the production of Ford in India. But after 4 months they announced they will come back to India as an EV (Electric Vehicle) maker.

Marcedes-Benz is a German luxury car brand. The luxury brand is manufacturing and assembling in India since 1994. Earlier it was known as Mercedes-Benz India Private Limited. Later it changed the name to DaimlerChrysler India Pvt. Ltd.

Then after so many years, the whole Mercedes Group changed its name to Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes is the 2nd largest automaker in German. Now it is also the largest luxury car maker in India.

Fiat is the last car company on my list. FCA India Automobiles Private Limited was incorporated in 1997. It was formed for the production of cars and engines under three brands i.e. Fiat ( Italian automobile manufacturer), Abarth (Italian racing and road car maker), and Jeep (American automobile company).

The company has a manufacturing plant in Ranjangaon& Maharashtra. And the plants have a capacity of manufacturing capacity of 3,55,000 cars and engines.

Jeep Compass, Jeep Wrangler(Jl), Jeep Grand Cherokee, (Wl), and Jeep Meridian are manufactured/assembled locally. Surprisingly, FCA India Automobiles Private Limited is the 9th largest Indian car manufacturer by sales in India.
